Who is new in country music?
While many new artists tread the Yellow Brick Road, songwriter, Leila Fisher, releases new young country music debut album ‘Life’s Good Medicine’ tackling major themes such as marriage, children, separation, war, hope and good karma.
Produced by Herm Kovac and featuring the very best of Australia’s country musicians including Stuie French, Mitch Farmer, Michel Rose, Randall Waller, ‘Life’s Good Medicine’ showcases some classy songwriting. Great melodies complement a refreshing vocal reminiscent of Allison Krauss.
Leila certainly has the background to write country music. She grew up in a large family on a half million acre cattle station in Outback Queensland in the middle of nowhere. Raised by her German mother, Leila says her music draws a lot of influence from growing up with her five siblings in the remote Gulf country.
“We had no electricity. No running water. We didn’t even really have a house – it was a roof with walls but no windows. Someone had shot out the windows with a shotgun! The previous owners had painted a crude sign on the front door ‘No pigs or shooting in or out of this house’. It was a great talking point until Mum painted over it!
Because it was so hot, often we slept outside on the ground in swags. I remember taking a girlfriend home from boarding school for the holidays and she was dumbfounded at how different our life was. She didn’t think bull catching by day and sleeping on the bank of a dirty waterhole trapping cattle in the middle of the night is what girls did on their school holidays.”
‘Life’s Good Medicine’ is a return to Leila’s musical roots.
What is the mood of the album?
‘Life’s Good Medicine’ features beautiful ballads, quirky country blues, and upbeat songs like Run Run Run and Making History to turn up loud in the car for those long road trips. Check out Desert of Love for sure to be featuring the only camel in country music.
‘Life’s Good Medicine’ grew partly out of the 2006-2007 drought. The pressure of experiencing the drought first hand was the inspiration for Ghost town.
Evocative lyrics and beautiful imagery encompass the ballads. From the more traditional country of Fresh Horses, Hand over my Heart to the cross-over country Swim, Be my Honey now and Put the Moon to Bed, this album places you squarely in the moment.
A special song for Leila is Home Someday. “I wrote this song after hearing of the death of a soldier in Afghanistan in November 2007. I never knew him but I couldn’t get the concept of hope out of my head.
What are people saying?
Toni Koch Promotions (USA):
You are an inspiration to me and many others. I loved your music and envision one day that someone like Faith Hill and many others will be singing your songs!
Randall Waller (touring guitarist and harmony vocalist for Shania Twain 1999-2005):
‘Ghost town’ was a beauty - and the 'desert shagging' song (Desert of Love) - as Herm called it......blinder.....
